Personal profile

Biography

My research focuses on health inequalities in low and middle income countries and involves extensive international collaboration. Following 10 years working with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation maternal mortality reduction initiative at the University 2000-10 and a postdoctoral fellowship at the World Health Oorganization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Verbal Autopsy at Umeå University in Sweden 2011-13, I returned to Aberdeen and the Institute of Applied Health Sciences (IAHS) in 2013 where I have been one of the small number of researchers who has grown a successful portfolio of research in global health and global challenges. I have demonstrated significant and consistent initiative and determination in building the profile of the University and IAHS in this area, which is also an area of key strategic development in the University. I have progressed multiple programmes of independent research and have secured a continuous series of awards since 2015 in excess of 1 million GBP, over 80% of which as Principal Investigator. I have also made extensive contributions to postgraduate teaching, leading a successful programme of interdisciplinary practice-based postgraduate study in Global Health and Management 2013/14-16/17, attracting approximately 20 students per annum since 2016/17 an increase of 500% since AY 2012/13. I have developed and delivered a suite of five new taught online and face-to-face courses using a range of new methods and established international relationships with key external agencies for work-based learning. I manage diverse teaching teams and lead innovations in work-based learning and new subject areas popular with postgraduates (systems and policy). I was appointed as deputy director for the Centre for Global Development in 2016, am a steering committee member and member of the Delivery of Care research theme, a member of the Athena Swan Self-Assessment Group, and member of the Post Graduate Education Group in IAHS.
