Abstract

If a head coil is to be used to image the lower neck, the coil should be made to fit over the patient's shoulders. A crossed ellipse coil has the advantage that it can be wound on a suitably shaped former which allows the neck to enter the central volume of the coil. Moore and Holland (1980) have used a crossed ellipse coil in an NMR imager with access along the bore of the main magnet. A crossed ellipse coil can also be wound for use in an NMR imager with a side access magnet.
