Abstract

Exponentially growing cultures of Nitrosomonas europaea were inhibited by addition
of 0.5/~g nitrapyrin ml -~. This inhibition was increased by simultaneous addition of 0.046/xg
Cu 2+ ml -~ as copper sulfate. This contradicts a previous report that copper relieves inhibition of
ammonia oxidation by nitrapyrin, which report has formed the basis for hypotheses regarding
the mechanism of action of this inhibitor.
