Abstract

A suite of monoclonal antibodies has been raised to the haemocytes of Mytilus edulis, using haemocyte
populations separated on Percoll gradients. A proportion of antibodies were found to selectively stain both
granular and hyaline cell types, and at the ultrastructural level to react with both granules and cytoplasm.
Cross reactivity studies revealed some reaction with haemocytes from other bivalve species, suggesting the
existence of common epitopes, which may have a role in basic haemocyte function. The potential effects of
the antibodies on haemocyte adhesion and phagocytosis have been assessed.
