Abstract

The effects of inertia on the modes of collapse of two classes of structures are described and discussed. Systems of structural elements which have a monotonically increasing load-deflection curve deform under the influence of structural waves when subjected to impact loading. The behavior of tubular columns is dominated by the effects of instability which are also strongly influenced by the inertia of the structure.
