N2 - This publication is a collection of documentary materials by the Russian and Chinese anthropologist Sergei Mikhailovich Shirokogorova (1887–1939) and his wife Elizaveta Nikolaevna Shirokogorova (Robinson, 1884–1943). The name of Sergei Mikhailovich is widely known, first of all, as the author of the theories of ethnos and psycho-mental complex. However, until recently, historians of anthropology knew almost nothing about the fate of this pair of ethnographers. By comparing a huge number of documents from Russian and foreign archives, the editors restore not only the biographies of researchers, but also the social life of their ideas across national borders, offering to look at the history of Russian anthropology at the very beginning of the 20th century as a transnational project. In addition, this publication is the return of the cultural heritage of the Evenks, Orochens and Manchus - records of their social and economic practices, rituals, etc. In addition, the publication is richly illustrated with archival photographs and drawings, as well as maps that restore the course of the field work of researchers and show the cultural and linguistic diversity of the local population. This edition also includes three audio-visual supplements created from phonographic recordings and photographs and edited into films. They are posted on the YouTube channel of the Institute of Russian Literature (Pushkin House) RAS. Links and QR codes to these appendices are given in the preface and corresponding sections of the volumes. Both volumes are addressed to anthropologists, folklorists, historians of science and specialists in the history, folklore and anthropology of the North and Siberia, as well as representatives of indigenous peoples, for whom this publication can become a source of restoration of lost knowledge.
