Abstract

Periphery is an evasive concept. For those dwelling in the commonly perceived periphery, the periphery is always the centre of the world. This book has a strong focus on the northern edges of Europe – as far away as a 9th-century missionary could imagine. However, northern research and scholars, some of whom are represented in this book, are challenging this conception over and over again. Maybe it is time to reimagine periphery?
