Abstract

Square 'tubular rings' were formed by welding together four lengths of metal tubing at mitred joints. The quasi-static load-deflection characteristics of such components were investigated and compared with the behaviour of a free tube under lateral compression. The dynamic response of a single tubular ring and a system of such rings is described and the source of the enhanced energy absorbing capacitiy is discussed.
